[The Birth of Kiba]
During the Edo Period, Kiba was born as a lumberyard for lumber that was used to build the town of Edo. At that time, with the sea nearby, Kiba was suitable for the transport and preservation of lumber because the transport canal had salinity being mixed with seawater making it difficult for insects to latch onto the wood. (Currently the land covers the area around the Kiba Station on the Tozai Subway Line and Kiba Park)
Then, after going through the period of the Meiji Restoration, the Great Tokyo Earthquake, and destruction of war, Kiba developed as a lumber town.

Shinkiba
Built on reclaimed land, Shinkiba now bustles with activity.
[The Move to Shinkiba]
In the mid-1950's entering a high economic growth period, problems of land sinkage and pollution appeared in the area, transportation conditions deteriorated, and construction boom took place after which a decision to move from the area was made.
So, Kiba was moved to Shinkiba, which was built on reclaimed land from Tokyo Bay. The move began in 1974 and was completed in 1982, and a world prominent lumber processing and distribution base, "Shinkiba," was born.
